Quinta das Faias is a charming and cosy alternative to hotels in Madeira. Here you can find a genuine self-catering in Madeira, perfectly compatible with the needs and rhythms of a family. You can choose between a cottage with 2 bedrooms or a cottage with 1 bedroom. Both have one bathroom and a living room with kitchenette, while outside both have a Terrance and a private garden where you will find tables, sun umbrellas, chairs and loungers for relaxing moments. Situated at an altitude of 700 meters, Quinta das Faias has a botanical park, composed by a diverse flora and different trees, such as Til, Loureiro, Folhado and Barbuzano among other endemic varieties from Madeira's Laurisilva Forest and very beautiful Camellias. We also raise chickens, woodcocks, ducks and turkeys. |
Our history
The visit of the Dukes of Bragança to Quinta das Faias in 20th July 1959. They enjoyed Madeira Wine and folklore dance in the gardens, followed by lunch with our family.
Quinta das Faias was part of the largest agricultural property in Madeira during the 19th century, known as the Herdade dos Castanheiros. At the end of the century our great grandfather Luis Rocha Machado bought it from his cousin Count Carvalhal II who was known to be an enchanting person and a “bon vivant” spending his time travelling between Europe’s major capital cities. It was mostly an agricultural property, with large areas of orchards, apple trees and pear trees and with other areas cultivated for cattle breeding and for agroforestry, especially pine.
During this period, many important personalities visited Count Carvalhal's properties in Madeira, such as Austria’s Archduchess Leopoldina in 1817, when she passed by Madeira on her way to Brazil where she would marry D. Pedro I; or Portugal’s Infant D. Luis in 1858 (later Portugal’s King Luis I, “O Popular”), in the company of Portugal’s Archduchness Carlota.
The actual main house was built in 1853 and improved in 1956 and was used as a retreat for the family during the hot and humid summer months in Funchal, due to its mild temperatures and beautiful surroundings. During this period several houses were also built in the property for the agricultural workers who lived there all year long.
In July 20th, 1959 the Dukes of Brangança, D. Duarte Nuno, D. Maria Francisca and their three children (heirs of the Portuguese Royal Family) visited Quinta das Faias during their stop in Madeira on their official trip to visit to the Portuguese Colonies.
In the year 2000, we inherited the property and renamed it Quinta das Faias in a tribute to the two impressive “Faia” trees (Fagus – beech) that exist in the property, having invested especially in growing its gardens and preserving its secular trees, many of them endemic species of Madeira’s Laurisilva forest.
More recently we transformed one of the abandoned houses for workers into a small catholic chapel where our youngest daughter got married, where our grandchildren where baptized and where are held Masses to celebrate special occasions.
We have also recovered two other worker’s houses in the property, transforming them into cottages, being faithful to the house’s historical layout and equipping them with modern appliances for your comfort. With this cottages we look forward to share our piece of paradise with all who come to visit Madeira and are looking to experience Madeira’s culture, beauty and its natural environment.

Services
The Hortênsia Cottage has a gross floor area of 70 m2, with 2 bedrooms, the master bedroom has a double bed of 1.60 x 2.00 m and an oven of the old kitchen, and the other bedroom has two beds 0.9 x 2.0m, one full bathroom (sink, toilet, bidet and bath) and a living room with a wood burning stove and a kitchenette, offering even outside a patio and private garden, equipped with table, umbrella Parasols, chairs and loungers for relaxing moments.
The Cottages have central heating, a kitchenette with
fridge, microwave, electric hob, extractor, toaster, electric kettle,
coffee maker, blender. In the bathroom a hairdryer.
For your commodity, Wifi and Cable TV on a LCD TV are included,
as well private parking and maid service three times per week.
The Quinta is 1 km from the center of Camacha, where there is a pharmacy, health center, post office, banks, pump station, taxis station and Catholic church. Walking distance from the Quinta there are 3 restaurants, supermarket, take-away and bakery.
We can provide, according to the price list, for wood for the stove,
washing of your clothes, eggs from our chickens and fresh bread
and pasteries for breakfast or a dish for a meal. You can also ask
or an upgraded daily maid service.
Terms & Conditions
It is important to remember that renting a cottage is different from reserving a room at a hotel, bed and breakfast or resort. The benefits of renting include having a home experience with full home advantages available to you throughout you stay.
Rental cottages offer In addition to bedrooms and bathrooms, living areas, eating spaces and other conveniences such patios and private gardens. Come equipped with fully stocked kitchenette, central heating and Wi-Fi and Cable TV on a LCD TV included.
The happy tenant is one who rents a home and makes use of it in the same way that they make use of their own home.
1 - PAYMENTS
A 30% deposit of the total cost quoted must be paid, within 7 days of the booking. Before a PREVISIONAL booking can be taken (until this deposit is in place, the booking remains an enquiry only and therefore it can be booked by another Guest).
The deposit will be deducted from the total cost quoted to the Guest and the balance will be paid at the beginning of your stay.
Payments will have to be made in cash or by bank transfer. We do not accept credit cards
2 - DAMAGE DEPOSIT
Guests are asked for a deposit against damages of € 100.
The damage deposit will be refunded in full on your departure day, if there are no damages. Occasionally, if there is something broken or damaged, the deposit will be held until such time that the item has been replaced or the problem has been resolved.
Inside the cottage you will find a full Property Inventory.
3 - HOUSEKEEPING
Maid service is provided 3 times a week, Monday to Saturday, for all cottages.
Please note that there is no maid service on Sunday and Public Holidays. Maid service includes bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms, fire-place and floors. Also note that the washing of the kitchen pots/pans/dishes and the cleaning of the BBQ are not part of the daily service, however if there is time, attention will be given to the kitchen.
4 - CANCELLATION
All cancelations must be made by e-mail by the person who made the booking.
In the event of a cancellation the following charges (% of total cost quoted), will be made. The charge is dependent on the date the e-mail of cancellation is received in relation to the commencement of the rental period:
a. More than 6 weeks 30% (deposit)
b. Between 6-4 weeks 50%
c. 4 or less 100%
Please note that failure to occupy the accommodation booked or decline the property prepared upon arrival (by the Guest), will be deemed as cancellation by the Guest and the Owner reserves the right to resell all or part of the booking without prejudice to the right to collect the cancellation charges in full.
5 – INSURANCE
Please note that there is no holiday travel insurance included in your booking, therefore you may want to take this option through your usual family broker or travel agent when booking your flights. We firmly recommend that you consider insurance cover for cancellation, personal accident & liability, medical expenses, loss of luggage, cash, documents legal and theft etc. If you do bring valuables, please insure them individually for all eventualities, lock them away or keep them on your person at all times. Always lock away your cash or keep it on your person, Management accepts no responsibility for any personal loss.
Quinta das Faias are not responsible and accept no responsibility for any loss.
6 - SECURITY
Inside the cottages you will find a Rental Information Guide which contains useful information and important telephone numbers. All cottages have security locks on the front doors.
7 - LIABILITY
Quinta das Faias and the Owner are not responsible in any way for the loss or damage of any goods or personal belongings of the Guest and will be under no liability whatsoever in the event of cancellation, withdrawal or alteration of any arrangements or any losses or accidental expenses caused by reasons of war, civil strife, strikes, sickness, quarantine, bad weather conditions, natural disaster, fires, technical problems of any description, terrorist activities, closure of airports, or any other circumstances beyond their reasonable control. Quinta das Faias and the Owner will not be liable for any injury, sickness, loss, damage or additional expenses or inconvenience directly or indirectly arising out of the design, structure, use or condition of any building or premises, their approaches or contents or mechanical and/or electrical services belonging thereto or out of any defect therein. Quinta das Faias and the Owner will not in any circumstances whatsoever accept responsibility for loss of life, personal injury, illness, or loss or damage to luggage or personal effects or consequential loss other than for the negligence of their respective employees acting in the course of their employment. Quinta das Faias and the Owner cannot be held liable for any actions of any persons (other than for the negligence of an employee acting in the course of his employment) or the failure of any failure of any public service(s) or supplies of a technical nature connected with the holiday arrangements over which they have no direct control. In the unlikely event of failure of electrically supplied apparatus, Quinta das Faias and the Owner cannot be held responsible, but will endeavour to assist you when possible and will ensure that any extra payment made for this service is refunded.
Liability is limited to the provision of accommodation as booked. In the unlikely event, due to extraordinary circumstances that the accommodation should become unavailable after confirmation to you (and payment made in full), we will immediately advise your thereof. In the event of the property being sold, every effort will be made to relocate and/or upgrade before refunding in full. Our aim will be to provide you with suitable alternative accommodation or a similar size and equal to / or better than the property booked. If the alternative is not found, you will be entitled to a full refund of accommodation payments having been received by us.
8 - COMPLAINTS
In the unlikely event that you should have a complaint whist on holiday, please immediately inform the Owner, who will do their best to resolve any problem without delay. Any claim against Quinta das Faias, you can request the Book to the Owner.
9 - ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE
The Cottages will be ready for check in by 14H00 and checkout is 12H00.
Please help us to ensure your cottage is ready for occupancy by informing us the flight details and the approximate time of arrival. We recommend to coming straight from the airport to Quinta das Faias, because occasionally you can occupy the cottage earlier, and if not, you can go shopping nearby meanwhile.
The minimum period of the stay is 3 nights. Occasionally, it is possible for Guests top vacate the cottage later, so please check with the Owner.
